The setting is an outpost of the French Foreign Legion, the characters are tough-minded men having limited contact with the everyday world, and the themes cluster around the ultimately mysterious nature of human personality. Loosely based on Herman Melville's great novella "Billy Budd: Foretopman," this ravishingly filmed masterpiece is as emotionally stirring as it is dramatically enigmatic. It is must-see viewing for anyone interested in film's ability to transform musical rhythms and painterly images into cinematic art of the highest order. In French with English subtitles
A blind eight-year-old boy learns valuable lessons about life despite the efforts of his uncaring father to push responsibility for his welfare into the hands of others. Although it has a good heart and a warm spirit, this prettily filmed drama is more sentimental and manipulative than earlier Iranian films on youth-related subjects. In Farsi with English subtitles
Nonfiction study of South Africa's ambitious Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its efforts to cast a healing spotlight on the injustices that scarred the nation during its oppressive years of apartheid rule. The film emphasizes the historical facts and legal complexities of the four cases it examines in depth, rather than their individual outcomes, rightly suggesting that no single process or institution can bring a neat conclusion to so many decades of racial hostility and oppression. In English, Xhosa, and Afrikaans with English subtitles
One day, Kyutaro reluctantly decides to take an opportunity to work as a sword instructor in the Tosa domain on the island outpost of Shikoku. Nevertheless, he manages to rent a small boat, and sets sail for Tosa.
But the harmony goes only so far. Some tourists complain about the difficulty of finding a place to eat on the Sabbath, though there is always the rather charming YMCA café-restaurant right in the center of town. And while God rested on the seventh day, Jews keep up their quarrels. The focus of recent disputes has been the movies. In Jerusalem, they have traditionally been closed on Friday nights. This amounts to a real hardship for many, since Friday is the one night of the week not followed by a working day, and since Israelis are passionate moviegoers. They enjoy their movies even though a considerable part of the screen must be devoted to Hebrew and Arabic subtitles, as well as English ones if the film being shown is a European one.
Gonzalo Montoya (voiceover): "As the police commander in Tacambaro I know these armed men who attacked the military convoy on August 30, 1996 were narcotic traffickers. They all attacked military outpost in Guerrero and Chiapas. At this moment we are arresting individuals on suspicion of being members of the group and also anyone who part of above-ground peasant and worker organizations we have identified as fronts for the Popular Liberation Army. We are going to try to make a distinction between the Zapatistas and this new group - if we can." 781b155fdc
